Airport played key role in World War II

HERINGTON — The Herington Regional Airport sports a 4,250-foot long, 75-foot wide runway and covers an area just over 1,700 square miles in Morris County. Today, not many planes use the runway. The sound of the wind whispering across the open prairie has long replaced the roar of the four-engine propeller-driven bombers, which took off from the airstrip before heading into enemy territory during World War II.
